The Inception of This Foundation

In memory of our beloved daughter, Suu Myat Than, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 20, we provide educational support to students from Myanmar through the Suu Myat Than Education Foundation.

Since the February 2021 coup, students and educators in Myanmar have demonstrated remarkable resilience, participating in the civil disobedience movement and withdrawing from universities in protest. This turmoil has severely disrupted higher education, forcing many students to seek opportunities abroad, particularly in Southeast Asia. The ongoing civil war and recent military conscription have driven thousands more out of the country, leaving many young people in desperate search of ways to continue their education. Myanmar’s future looks bleak as its human capital collapses.

In 2024, the Foundation made its first award - a $1,200 scholarship to a student attending Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. There are more than sixty Myanmar students enrolled at Ton Duc Thang University alone, with many more studying across the region. This year, we are committed to expanding our support by providing scholarships to ten deserving students. Each $1200 scholarship for 2025 will help cover a student’s expenses and support their academic pursuits.
